How to Use “好” | Four Meanings of 好 | Richard Chinese Language [with flashcards]

There are 4 different meanings of the word  好:

(1)  好hǎo

good, nice, fine [adj./ adv.]

你的想法很好。

你的想法很好。

nǐ  de  xiǎng  fǎ  hěn  hǎo  。

Your idea is good.

(2)  好hǎo

well [adj./ adv.]

海伦的德语说得很好。

海倫的德語說得很好。

hǎi  lún  de  dé  yǔ  shuō  de  hěn  hǎo  。

Helen speaks German well.

[Verb + 得de + Adverb]

Verb + 得很好de  hěn  hǎo: verb + well

(你)做得很好。

(  nǐ  )  zuò  de  hěn  hǎo  。 

(You) do/did well. [Well done!]

(你)唱得很好。 

(  nǐ  )  chàng  de  hěn  hǎo  。

(You) sing/sang well.

(3)  好hǎo

very [adv.] :

It’s a common adverb we use to modify an adjective.

她的眼睛好漂亮。

她的眼睛好漂亮。

tā  de  yǎn  jīng   hǎo  piào  liàng   。

Her eyes are very beautiful.

(4)  好hào

be fond of; have a tendency to

[1]  Part of a term to indicate “to like”, “to be prone.”

爱好ài  hào: hobby – a hobby is something you LIKE

好奇hào  qí: curious – prone to feel interested in things

[2] Pay attention to the pronunciation “hao 4 [hào]”
